God Moves in a Mysterious Way by Indelible Grace

Lyrics

God moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform.
He plants his footsteps on the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

Ye fearful saints fresh courage take,
The clouds you so much dread,
Are big with mercy, and shall break,
With blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his grace.
Behind a frowning providence,
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour.
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain.

God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

Reflection

This song was written by William Cowper, the same man who wrote “There is a Fountain”.1 It answers the desperate plea of “Why God?” not with trite truths or calloused counsel, but with comfort and grace. It does not seek to explain away our hurts nor minimize their sting; it deals with them well and beautifully says, “Trust God”. It’s been a comfort to me in suffering, and I hope it will be life-giving to you as well.
