Troas, Lost to the Sea

2022.05.18

Paul stopped in Troas both on his second (Acts 16:8, 11) and third missionary journeys (Acts 20:5, 6). On his third missionary journey, Paul was accompanied by at least eight others: Sopater of Berea, the son of Pyrrhus; Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians; Gaius of Derbe; Timothy; Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia; and Luke the doctor (Acts 20:4).

They all stayed in the port city for seven days (20:6); on their last day, a Sunday, Paul preached literally all night (20:7-12). Poor Eutychus was even raised from the dead!

While almost nothing of the town remains, the remnants of the old Roman breaker which guarded the ancient harbor still exist. The Scriptures are truth, and need no historical verification. But it’s amazing to see historical confirmation of Scripture in the modern world!
